Kittles Summer Fishing News
Sacramento River Launch Ramps:
Sacramento River
Stripers
Striper fishing on the Sacramento river has been steady this summer. There are still good numbers of fish throughout the system. Fish are being caught from Knights Landing up to Chico. Most of the fish right now are shakers with a keeper every now and then. The best bait to catch good numbers of fish are sardines or anchovies. If you want to target keeper fish, try using 7-10 inch plastic ringworms (black, black w/ red flake, black w/ chart tail and white), pencil poppers (white w/ red head, trout or silver/black), swimbaits (river2sea bottom walker 120 trout or white), large flies or hair jigs around wood cover. This is the time of year when the real giants are caught. Fish up to 50lbs are in our river system right now. To catch one of these monsters use a live pike minnow (8-12 inches long) fished on a free spool around cover or deep holes. Remember, it takes a long time for stripers to reach the 40-50lb range so please take pictures and measurements and release these trophys to fight another day.
Shad
Shad started showing up in the river around the first week of May and are still biting very well. Shallow gravel or sand bars are holding fish from Wards Landing up to Chico. Top lures have been shad grubs on a 1/8oz jig head in chartreuse, pink or orange and shad darts (1/4oz whtie w/ red head). Shad files in chartreuse, pink or purple are working well also.
Salmon
This years Salmon season will only be from November 1st through December 31st with a one fish per day limit. Catch and release fishing will be allowed with barbless hooks as long as the mortality rate is very low. If there are to many fish dying from stress of the fight, fish and game has the right to close the entire river system to fishing as long as the salmon are present. We have a good number of spinners, spreaders, kwikfish and lure building components in stock now. One new salmon lure out is the UV K-15 kwikfish by Luhr Jensen. They come in orange, pink, green and blue. Come by to check them out, they look great!
Clear Lake:
The Clear Lake bass bite is finally tuning on. The smokey skies have helped the topwater bite. Frogs, spooks and wakebaits are producing quality fish. To catch good numbers of fish, throw senkos around the tules or shade pockets. Off shore rock pile can also produce well this time of year with jigs and shakey heads. Remember you will need to have a muscle inspection sticker on your boat to fish on Clear Lake. You can pick one up at limit out bait and tackle in the Oaks or any other tackle shop. To keep up with the times we have expanded our swimbait section to now include Reaction Strike, Osprey, Money Minnows, Maverick, Canyon Plastic, River2Sea, Rago and soon the hard to find Basstrix will be in stock.
Lake Oroville
Even with the lower than average water shed this year, Lake Oroville is starting to turn on. Spotted bass have been on the bite the past month with anglers boating up to 80 fish per day. Most of the bass have been in the 12"-15" slot range and have to be released. Fish are holding from right on the bank to 40-50ft down. Top baits to try are senkos(watermelon, r. trout natural shad and firetiger), river2sea bottomwalker swimbaits (stock trout), topwater (spooks or poppers) and plastic roboworms on a drop shot or darter head (prizm kraw, morning dawn, warmouth and oxblood). The Coho salmon bite has been excellent this summer fishing sardines or glow squids or hoochies fished deep in front of the bridge or the dam.

QUIT WISHING GO FISHING!!
From the Bass Boat
by Garrett Charter
With the new year upon us, so are the new products for 2008. This year we are expanding our inventory to include a wide selection of swimbaits. From catching crappie to stripers, swimbaits are the hottest baits on the market right now. It’s said it takes a big bait to catch a big fish, and some of these baits are big.
Swimbaits range in size from one to twelve inches long in a variety of weights, actions and colors. Floating swimbaits or wakebaits, are fished either on the surface or just under the service. They create the wake of a bait fish escaping which is irresistible to big fish. Baits that resemble bluegills, shad or trout are the way to go. Try the River2Sea Kong or Optimum wakebait. Slow sinking baits are the most popular and easiest to use. These baits have a natural swimming action that can fool the largest fish. Literally all you do is throw them out and reel them in, jerking or pausing every now and then. Canyon plastics swim doctor, Castaic platinum; Reaction Strike Poseidon, Basstrix, Money Minnows and River2Sea’s Kong are all good baits to try. Last but not least are the bottom bouncing swimbaits. These heavy baits are used to keep in contact with the bottom to produce reaction strikes. They are great for fishing deep water points and ledges. Most of the strikes come when you can hang the bait up on the bottom and then pull it free. River2Sea bottom walkers are ideal for this situation. They come in 2 to 9 inch sizes and a wide range of colors. Trout, white and chartreuse shad are hard to beat.
Swimbaits can be intimidating to inexperienced anglers. You can not become a great swimbait fisherman without throwing them. The key is to find a bait you have confidence in and go find your trophy fish.
