Be Your Own Archery Action Hero

Many states, especially in the southeast, now allow crossbows for hunting.

Blockbuster movies like The Avengers, Hunger Games and Brave sold millions of tickets. The buzz generated by fans of these films focused on more than just the adventures of Katniss Everdeen or the heroics of Hawkeye. Archery played a central role in each of these films, and as a result we have seen our customers walking in the door with a renewed interest in archery and crossbow products.

Archery is definitely a family sport and while young men are usually most interested in a compound hunting bow, the increasing number of young girls taking up a bow are most interested in the traditional recurve models, particularly entry level models.

Our experts here at the store can point out the best bow for every member of the family, and we can build and tune the bow for maximum performance and enjoyment.

Crossbows enjoy resurgance
Besides recurves, another archery option getting a big boost from the media is the crossbow. Television shows like the Walking Dead have featured crossbows prominently.

Crossbows have also benefited as hunters look for new ways to practice their pastime and stay out in the field longer. Easing of hunting regulations, an aging hunting community and curiosity about new ways to hunt are increasing interest in crossbow products.

More and more states, spurred by booming populations of whitetail deer, are doing away with prohibitions on crossbows. Many states, particularly in the southeast, have added and extended crossbow seasons to get more people in the field. Several states in the northeast have followed suit and the momentum behind crossbow hunting is spreading west.

A large part of the appeal of the crossbow is that this form of archery allows older hunters to get back in the field for the many special archery seasons offered by wildlife managers. In the past, statistics have shown the bowhunters in the 55- to 60-year-old age group tend to drop out of the sport. Using an assist makes the crossbow relatively easy to load and from then on it's just point and shoot. We can show you how to do this, with an emphasis on safety in the field.

While a crossbow might be a great choice for the older hunter in your family, the fact is they are fun to shoot and easy to learn how to use, making crossbows a great choice for some family shooting fun on the range even if regulations in your favorite hunting zones don't allow crossbows in the field.

Recurve bows are popular again, while compound bows are best for hunting.
